Happy movement Wednesday!
Today I have attempted to recreate the Magic Forest story that we have played in class before. I did not have the book to read the story from so I recited it as best that I could from memory. Remember, this is a movement piece, so get up and move. I hope that you have fun turning into rocks, trees, bushes, and flowers! I wish I could be there to see your shapes. I will imagine them in my mind from all the fun times we had with this story during class. Click here to watch the video. I will see you on Friday, for music enrichment Friday and our live sing along at 3:00!

Yesterday was Memorial Day and I hope that you all had an enjoyable break from tiring Zooms and staring at a computer screen.
Today's video is Memorial Day themed! Go check it out here! We are singing/ learning You're a Grand Old Flag today. We begin with a bunch of echo singing but put it together with accompaniment at the end. I hope that you enjoy learning this song. If you already know it from previous years at Lyles-Crouch then I hope enjoy reviewing and singing along. I will be bringing it back in June for Flag Day so learn it now so you can be ready to sing it together then! Have a great rest of your day and I will see you back here again tomorrow for some movement! Happy Friday!
Remember that our sing along is still at 3:00 today! I can't wait to see you there for some more singing. Yes, we will still be doing Disney, but I will also be including some songs from other movies as well to see if you all enjoy those. Did you look at the Google homepage this week? This week was especially musical! On Wednesday, it was Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's 61st birthday. He is no longer living, but Google took the time to remember him on his birthday. If you did not see the video that Google posted you can check it out here. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a native Hawaiian singer and is most well known for his cover/mash up of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World. For today's video I did a cover of his version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Take a look here. Google kept going with the musical theme and did a history lesson of the m'bira yesterday. The m'bira is an African instrument made from a piece of wood with metal prongs on top that create music. You can take a look at the picture below if you were unable to see the doodle yesterday. Each prong is a different length and thickness to become a different note and the bottle caps at the bottom produce a buzzing sound when the prongs are played. Alright, I cannot wait to see you all at 3:00. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend. I will be posting on Tuesday next week since Monday is a holiday. See you then! It's hump day and I have 2 movement songs for you!
The first is a song about cows. You are supposed to be waking up early to go and hunt the cows (bring them in to pasture). It's hot, though, and you can't find them. In desperation you fall slowly to your hands and knees and decide to try again tomorrow. The second song we have done in class if you had me for Kindergarten. The song is called Strolling in the Park and sings about wandering around the park where you meet a stranger. The beginning of the song changes to different ways of meandering around the park. Make sure you find some space to move around for this one! Here is the link: https://youtu.be/rTnWdT336Nk I hope that you have fun! Happy Monday!
I enjoyed singing with you all again on Friday! Everyone seems to be enjoying singing Disney songs, so this week we will continue with more. This week, though, I will be expanding to other movies as well such as Trolls and The Greatest Showman. If you have a song from a favorite children's movie that you enjoy and would like to sing, suggest it below. I hope to see you all again on Friday! Today I have 2 echo songs for you to join me with. The first is a camp song called Flee Fly Flo and is a fun echo song that gets faster and faster with each repetition. I hope that you enjoy singing it with me here. Here are the lyrics below if you would like to take a look: Flee Flee fly Flee fly flo Vista Vista Kumulala kumulala kumulala vista Oh no no no not the vista Eenie meenie epsileenie oo wahla wahlameenie Eenie meende epsileenie oo wahla wah A beep billy oaten boaten bobo skadeeten dottin A beep billy oaten boaten shhhh Yes, they are nonsense words, so you don't have to stress about getting them all correct. Make up your own words while echoing? That's fine! It's meant to be fun not frustrating. The next is an African children's game from Ghana that has movement to go with it. We have sung it in Kindergarten before so maybe you will recognize it. The lyrics are: Kye Kye Kule Kye Kye Kofinsa Kofisa Langa Kaka Shilanga Kum Aden Nde Kum Aden Nde HEY! As far as the translation of the words, there is a lot of discussion over what the words mean. Some websites say that the translation is similar to head, shoulders, knees, and toes, but research in other places states that this is not true. Here is what I found in my research and think makes the most sense: I would compare this song to games that we have that call on a person to do a certain movement, such as Disco from GoNoodle. In Disco, the beginning of the song starts out with "Yo Lindsay" "That's me" "Yo Lindsay" "Still me." You call on a person by there name and they respond. Kye kye kule, the phrase, appears to be a call to another person to get their attention. Kofi is a Ghana name, so the second line seems to be calling on a person. The last line means bend down and stand up, just like the game has us do. I hope that you have fun singing these two songs! See you on Wednesday. Happy Friday!
For today's music enrichment Friday, I have a book for you to listen to: What Do You Do With a Chance? by Kobi Yamada. The book talks about what it is like to risk taking chances and how sometimes they don't turn out the way that you planned. It emphasizes how chances are risks worth taking and sometimes when we don't take chances we could look back and regret it. Being stuck in doors makes me think about all the chances we had before: chances to hug students and family members, to get a new hairstyle, to try different restaurants, to go to sports games, or to go concerts. What kinds of chances are you going to take when this is all over? Of course, today is music enrichment Friday so I have some music to accompany the book while I read. Each of the pieces you will hear today are Orff Schulwerk pieces taken from the Music For Children Volumes. Some of these pieces I have used to accompany different activities during class or taught pieces of to older grade levels to play. I hope that you enjoy listening and reading the book. Click here to take a look. I hope to see you later today for our Disney Sing-Along Part 2! Happy Movement Wednesday!
Today I have a Danish folk dance for you called Seven Jumps. It is a circle dancing children's game. At the beginning of the video I give yo can idea of how the music is set up and what you will be expected to do and then I do the entire dance at the end of the video for you to dance along with me. Check it out here. If you would like to dance along to just the song you can find it here. You can also find it on Spotify. The CD it comes from is called Shenanigans. This Friday we will be doing our Disney sing-along part 2. I hope to see you there! Let me know if there are any songs that you would like to sing. Also on Friday, Cats the musical will be showing for free on the YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On which is a channel put together by Andrew Lloyd Weber, the composer of the musical Cats. I will be checking it out this weekend. If you have any interest in Broadway musicals, you can too! Happy Singing Monday!
I am so glad I was able to see so many of your faces on Friday for our Disney sing along! Since we did not get to all of the songs on Friday and there were some suggestions that I did not have, I will be hosting a Disney sing along part 2 this Friday. I hope to be able to sing with you all again this Friday! Unfortunately, it looks like my blog post did not post last Friday. I am so sorry! I do not know what happened. I made the video and typed up the post, but something must have gone wrong with the internet connection when I clicked post. I did post the video on Clever, so there is a possibility that you could have accessed it there. If you were not able to see the video here it is here. I had put together a Disney Medley to inspire us to sing our hearts out during the sing along. All the songs in the medley are composed by Alan Menken who did the music scores for quite a few Disney movies such as Hercules, Hunch Back of Notre Dame, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Tangled, and Beauty and the Beast. He will also be working on the live action of The Little Mermaid and writing some new songs with Lin Manuel Miranda who did the music for Moana. Anyway, that was what I posted on Friday but for some reason you did not get to see it. Again, I am so sorry! Today, I have a song for you called Rattlin' Bog. This is a fun song about a tree in a bog and so many different parts of the tree. It is a cumulative song similar to the 12 Days of Christmas where you add on one day each time and then list the rest. Rattlin' Bog is an Irish folk song. Rattlin' is a word that, in this song, means splendid. You can watch and learn the song here. You can also listen to the song perform by a group called the Irish Rovers here. I hope that you enjoy the song and come back on Wednesday for movement Wednesday! Monday was May the 4th, also known as Star Wars day! Today's movement Wednesday is Star Wars movement. Get out your imaginary light saber and battle along to some Star Wars music. Click here to go watch the video. If you enjoyed moving like a jedi and want some more music to move to you can find the full version of the Star Wars theme song here.
Did you know that the Star Wars theme music is composed by John Williams? Did you know that John Williams also composed the music for E.T., Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and Jaws? How awesome is that?! I can't wait to see you all on Friday for our live music Zoom and music enrichment Friday! Both will be Disney themed! In today's video I am reading Not Quite Narwhal with permission from Simon and Schuster Publishing. I love this book and am excited to be sharing it with you today! I have a song that I wrote to go along with the book that we learn and sing in the video as well. Click here to watch today's Singing Monday video.
In the video I mention our live music zoom on Friday! We will be singing Disney songs! Do you have a specific Disney song you would like to recommend? Make sure to comment here, on today's YouTube video, or send me an email to let me know. Below are a couple of the songs that we might sing on Friday, so check them out so you will be ready to sing along! Under the Sea I'll Make a Man Out of You I Just Can't Wait to Be King Never Had A Friend Like Me Alright, I hope to see you back on Wednesday for movement Wednesday! |
